Five definitions of "Fantasy"
First of all, Attebery defines "Fantasy" as "Any narrative which includes as a significant part of its make-up some violation of what the author clearly believes to be natural law". for example, flying elephants;dragon; speaking donkey and cookie man don't exist in ral life. Those things are one of the keys for a fantasy. In addintion,he also thinks that fantasy is a game of sorts, and it demands that one play whole-heartedly, accepting for the moment all rules and turns of the game.
secondly, fantasy needs consistency. Readers and writers are committed to maintaining the illusion for the entire course of the fiction. Tolkien refers to this commitment as “secondary belief”(J.R.R.Tolkien.)
Furthermore,E.M.Forster speaks of the reader of fantasy as being asked to “pay something extra”and W.R.Irwin defines A narrative is a fantasy if it presents the persuasive establishment and development of an impossibility, and arbitrary construct of the mind with all under the control of logic and rhetoric.”

Hi Lily,
ReplyDeleteNice to see you here on the Blog :)
Please remember to follow instructions and answer 2 to 3 questions each week, as instructed. Also, when you are referring to the critical readings (which is great - you should do this!!) just make sure your use APA style in text referencing. For example, in your first sentence in the above post, you have mentioned Attebery, but you still need to add the DATE of the text in brackets. Another example, where you reference Tolkien, Forster, and Irwin the in text referencing style is incorrect, and they are not featured on your reference list.
It would also be a good idea to have a quick proof read before you publish your post as you have a few 'typos' here :)
I like your fantasy examples - but I don't think you have written the 5 definitions that Attebery writes. Can you see any more in the reading?
It is also a good idea to refer to the primary text under discussion, in this case Le Guin's EarthSea. Do you think EarthSea is a good example of Fantasy if you consider Attebery's definitions? It would be great to use examples from the primary text to back up your answers.
I hope this helps!
Good Luch :)
To be clear - if Attebery references something in his articel, it still needs referencing, even thoug he is referencing another text himself.
