Week 1
Do you think comics are a children's or adult genre/media?
Comics are a kind of popular genres. I don’t think comics are just a children’s or adult genre. Like another genre, fantasy. It not just belongs to children or adult. Anyone different comic has its own audience group. It base on the topic of comics. However, when an adult and a child read a same comic, they will have different reviews.
“The adventures of Tintin” is a good example. This comics suit both children and adults. Just like the author of Tintin said “Tintin was aimed at all young people aged from seven to seventy-seven.” In fact the appeal has proved much wider (Farr, 1991).

How does Farr (1991) justify Tintin’s appeal to adults?
Tintin is a famous comic in the world. This comic has deeply history background. Tintin has a big appeal to both children and adults. When children read this comic, they will focus on the story. However, after they growing to a adult and read it again. Their understanding and appreciation will get a high level.
As Farr (1991) said “The child will be gripped by the excitement of Tintin, the comedy, even farce. The adult will additionally find political satire and parody, Puns and prescience” (pp. 9).

According to the second Farr extract (p.50-59), how did Hergé research China for The Blue Lotus?
The Blue Lotus is one of The Adventures of Tintin. This story’s background is in China. Herge is very interesting about Chinese history and culture. He want to do a deep research about China in The Blue Lotus.
According to the second Farr extract (p. 50-59), Herge met Chang Chong-chen in the spring of 1934. “Long discussions followed which gave Herge a true of China that went far beyond what the newspaper cuttings he continued to accumulate could suggest. A lifelong fascination with China was awakened by Chiang.”(p.51) Chang told him a lot, taught him a lot and show him a real China that he never known. Herge said “It was at the time of The Blue Lotus that I discovered a new world.”(p.51)

Hi Jessica,
ReplyDeleteGreat to see you on the blog!
This is good work - however I think you could write a littel more on each question. Just think about WHY we are asking the question.
Do you think the REAL CHINA was portrayed in the comic? Did Herger do this successfully?
Hi Esther,
ReplyDeleteThanks your comment.
I think Herger portrayed a real China in the comic. He got a lot of ideas from Chang Chong-chen. Actually The Blue Lotus has a complicated background, like the war between China and Japan. The comic reflects some problems in China on that time.
I think Herge did a great interpretation of China, he strived to achieve some sort of realism and faith to the source material. The Japanese however, looked like slightly racist caricatures i thought; Due of course to Herges friendship with Chang, and the fear of Japan, present at that time
